San Sebastian to Gaztelugatxe: the route at a glance

The draw is genuine: a rock 120 km west, 241 steps to a tenth-century hermitage, and—if you watched Game of Thrones— the exact silhouette of Dragonstone against the Cantabrian Sea. The cost is just as genuine: roughly three hours in a vehicle and a day that runs 7.5 to 9 hours door to door. Which is exactly why no tour worth booking simply shuttles you out and back; each one hangs a second city on the drive, and choosing it is the whole game. • Come back the long way: Two paths link the car park to the bridge: Urizarreta is short and savage, Ermu is longer and gentler. Take Urizarreta down, Ermu back up, and thank yourself.
  
• Self-driving? Stop in Getaria: The AP-8 passes Getaria, a tiny fishing port famous for grilled turbot and Getariako Txakolina, a perfect leg-stretch on the way west.
  
• Pause in Bakio for the beach: Bakio is a five-minute drive from the islet with a gorgeous beach; a dip in the Bay of Biscay is the ideal reward after the climb if you have your own car.
  
• On the Bilbao day, save room: The pintxo lunch is generous, often four pintxos with four pours. Go easy at the islet café so you arrive in Bilbao hungry.
